There are many fantastic films that take place on cruise ships, but watching Poseidon Adventure or Titanic right before going on a cruise might not be a good idea. There are some classic films, however, that will make you eager to hop on a ship and see if you might be able to create your own romantic adventure on the high seas.

Below are some of my favorite classic films.

Romance on the High Seas (1948)

Doris Day made moviegoers fall in love with her in her film debut as she went on a journey to Rio on what was supposed to be an anniversary cruise. The plot, however, is typical of many of Doris Day’s  comedy/musical films’ filled with misunderstandings, false identity, and hijinks

Royal Wedding (1951)

Another famous musical comedy starring Fred Astaire and Jane Powell show the mishap of a brother-sister dance act as they perform hot numbers in between tumultuous waves.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953)

Whether you’re planning a cruise with your best friend, sister, or significant other, this delightful flick will have your heart racing as you watch Lorelei Lee and Dorothy Shaw (Marilyn Monroe and Jane Russell), two showgirls traveling to Paris aboard this elegant ship while a private detective, (hired by Lorelei’s future father -in-law) secretly investigate whether she’s simply a gold differ or truly in love with her beau. Her performance of  “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” will have you packing your cruise wardrobe.

An Affair to Remember (1957)

Has anyone not seen this famous classic love story? I’ve forgotten that this move isn’t only about a couple who meets and plans to meet at the top of The Empire State Building six months later, but that they met and fell in love on a cruise. Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr star in this tearjerker.

There’s also the original 1937 film, but most will remember the undeniable chemistry between Grant and Kerr in the1957 remake.

Shall We Dance? (1937)

Fred Astaire stars with Ginger Rogers in this romantic comedy classic which takes place on a ship sailing from Paris to New York. The misunderstandings and mayhem in this film will make you think twice about taking a flight for your next vacation and have you calling a cruise consultant instead.
