Most articles about red flags in international dating tell you what you already know. Don't send money to someone you haven't met. Watch out if he won't video call. Be careful if things move fast. That advice isn't wrong, but it's not what actually trips women up. In fifteen years of doing this work, I've found the moments that matter most are quieter than that. They're the small, easy to explain away patterns that feel too minor to mention out loud, so nobody ever tells you to watch for them.
I want to be clear about something before we go further. Most people you meet online, across borders, or with a big age gap between you, are exactly who they say they are. Being foreign doesn't make a man suspicious. Being younger doesn't make him a liar. Meeting online instead of at church or through friends doesn't mean anything by itself anymore, that's just how people meet now. My own husband checks every box people are told to worry about. He's younger than me, he's Moroccan, and we met the way most couples meet these days. He is also one of the most loving, steady, caring men I have ever known. The goal here isn't to make you suspicious of every man who fits a certain profile. It's to help you notice patterns clearly, so you can move forward with real confidence instead of blind trust or constant second guessing.
The Pace Should Feel Warm, Not Urgent
A man who is genuinely falling for you will want to move at a pace that lets the relationship breathe. He asks questions and actually waits for the answers. He remembers small details you mentioned last week. That's normal, healthy interest.
What's worth noticing is a different rhythm entirely. He's calling you his soulmate, his future wife, the answer to his prayers, all within the first week or two, before you've had more than a couple of real conversations. He talks about your life together in specific detail before he knows basic things about you. This isn't automatically a scam. Some people fall fast and mean it. But it is a pattern worth sitting with. Ask yourself if the intensity matches how much he actually knows about you, or if it's outrunning it. A man with genuine intentions won't be offended if you want to slow things down a little to get your footing. Someone running a script usually pushes back on that, because slowing down gives you time to notice things.
How He Talks About Money, Even Before He Asks For It
Here's something most guides skip entirely. Financial manipulation rarely starts with a direct ask. It starts with stories. A stalled shipment at customs. A cousin's medical bill. A job that fell through at the worst possible time.
Real hardship is a normal part of life, and plenty of good, honest men go through hard financial stretches. That alone tells you nothing. What matters is what he does with it. Does he mention it and then keep handling his own life, or does the story linger and repeat, almost like it's being kept warm for later? Does he ever actually ask you to step in, even in a roundabout way, like sharing a bank number "just in case" or mentioning how much stress this is putting on him right in front of you? A man worth building a future with solves his own problems and lets you help because you want to, not because the story was engineered to make you feel like you should. If you ever get to the point where money changes hands or someone floats the idea, that's exactly what my Scam Probability Calculator was built for. It walks you through what's actually happening, without judgment.
His Life Should Hold Up to a Little Daylight
Most people, regardless of where they live, have some kind of digital trail. Old photos, tagged friends, a work history that makes sense, a social media account that's been around longer than a few months. That trail doesn't need to be extensive, and plenty of genuine, private men keep a light footprint online. That's fine.
What's worth paying attention to is consistency, not volume. Do the small details of his life line up over time, or do they shift depending on who's asking? Is he willing to hop on video, even if the connection is bad and even if he's a little camera shy? A genuinely private person will still show you his world eventually, even if it takes some warming up. Someone hiding something tends to have an excuse ready every single time, and the excuse is always about the technology, never about him.
A Note on Video Calls Specifically
One clear video call, where you can see his face move and respond in real time to something unexpected you say, tells you more than weeks of texting. It doesn't need to be fancy or long. It just needs to happen. If months go by and it somehow never quite works out, that's the pattern to pay attention to, not any single excuse on its own.
Straightforward Questions Deserve Straightforward Answers
This one is simple, and it's the one I trust the most. Ask him something plain about his life. What does a normal Tuesday look like for him? Who does he live with? What happened in his last relationship? Then notice whether he actually answers.
A man with nothing to hide might be a little guarded about painful topics; that's human, but he'll still give you something real to work with. What's worth flagging is when a direct question consistently gets met with a compliment, a deflection, or an answer so vague it could describe almost anyone. One vague answer means nothing. A pattern of them, across different topics, over weeks, tells you the ambiguity might be on purpose.
Look at the Pattern, Not the Moment
None of these signs mean anything by themselves. A man can be intense in his affection, go through a rough financial patch, be shy on camera, and give one awkward answer, and still be exactly who he says he is. What tells the real story is whether these things repeat, whether they cluster together, and whether he's willing to be transparent when you gently push for more. Good men welcome your questions because they have nothing to protect. That's the whole test.
