By Mia Ransom Parnell

I celebrated my 20th breast Cancerversary in October of 2017. That had been a tough year, full of deaths, despair, and so, so many doubts.

Once I decided to celebrate, my last-minute trip to Ireland quickly came together. I decided to do all new things to celebrate: a new country, a new airline, new accommodations, and new romance(s).

I was totally open to trying things I didn’t think I’d live long enough to experience. Ireland would be my first solo adventure and I packed cute clothes, my asymmetrical confidence, and condoms.

I arrived in the delightful town of Killarney in County Kerry and spent my first afternoon exploring and taking photographs of the architecture and glorious grounds. Did you know Killarney is on the Ring of Kerry?

I decided to hop into a local market and grab a bite to eat and was approached by a gentleman while I was standing in the tea aisle. He was handsome, had incredibly unruly hair that I wanted to run my hands through, and he apologized for interrupting me. I was NOT sorry! I thought “Damn, Ireland is awesome! I’m meeting someone interesting on my first day here!”

He introduced himself to me, said he was a local journalist, and that he saw me outside and decided to follow me into the store. I was flattered! Now, this may seem creepy to some people. And I know I stood out as the only Black woman with a little blonde afro in this small town. My hair and I were hard to miss! But I ALWAYS listen to my gut about places and people and I knew he meant me no harm. Hell, I’ve safely walked through Paris and Amsterdam at the crack of dawn because my gut told me to.

We chatted about who I was, why I was visiting, and where I was from. I asked him for a tea recommendation expecting that to lead to a hot date. He made a few recommendations and then said the reason he followed me into the store was to suggest some better places to take photographs.

I admit I was confused. I thought he was smitten at first sight and he just had to follow me to meet me and tell me.

But no, he was acting as a local tour guide and had no romantic interest in me whatsoever.

Bummer!!!

I took his advice and thanked him, then made my purchases and headed to my lodging.

I never saw him again and although I was disappointed, I wasn’t despondent. I came to Ireland to celebrate myself, my recovery, and my survivorship. I traveled to discover new things about myself and who I was decades after my diagnosis. I came to Ireland to, maybe, find romance. But I learned that I still loved myself and I could love and plan for my future, something I wasn’t sure would exist 20 years ago.

I actually did find love in Ireland. I met the “miracle Mia”, and she is still funny, beautiful, and adventurous enough to meet a potential partner in a grocery store. Also, she’s still hot as hell, but mostly thanks to those chemo-induced flashes!!
